Moonshine is trendy. Southern Living proclaimed it. And now there are “Moonshiner” birthday cards for sale at the local Wal-Mart?
In our family, it’s safe to say that a little hooch has always been popular at any wedding, birthday or dinner parties served up in cordial crystal glasses. Sometimes we are left with a few leftover jars in the refrigerator so we came up with new ways to use the ‘shine.
Here is my recipe for Orange Blossom Honey Moonshine Cake. Although it is probably possible to use any flavor of moonshine you have and change out the juice and zest to match, we have orange trees in the backyard and a mason jar of orange blossom honey moonshine. It’s the most delicious and moist cake we’ve ever had.
Orange Blossom Honey Moonshine Cake
First, assemble the ingredients and let them sit until they reach room temperature. This makes one giant pound cake so if you want to make a single loaf, just half the recipe.
2 sticks of butter
2 cups of sugar
1/3 cup of orange zest
3 cups of flour
1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
1 teaspoon of salt
1/4 cup of orange juice
3/4 cup of sour cream
1 teaspoon of orange blossom honey moonshine (you can do a small splash more if you’d like)
Once the butter, eggs, orange juice, and sour cream reach room temperature, you’ll pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a large circular tube pan. It also helps to line the bottom with parchment paper.
Cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl. Next, beat in the eggs, one at a time, and the orange zest. My suggestion is to add in a little bit of the orange zest with each egg to ensure that it will be thoroughly mixed throughout the batter.
Now you’ll need a second large bowl. In this you will sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In a third bowl, combine the orange juice, sour cream, and moonshine. Add the two mixtures alternately to the batter, beginning and ending with the flour. Once all three parts are mixed together with no lumps, pour the batter into the cake pan and make sure the top is as smooth as possible. The cake takes about an hour to bake, test it by sticking in a fork and seeing if it comes out clean.
If you’d like, and I highly recommend it, you can also make a drizzle for the cake. All you need is 1/2 cup of sugar, ½ cup of orange juice, and a table spoon or so of moonshine in a small sauce pan. Cook this over low heat until the sugar dissolves.
Once the cake is done, it’ll cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then take it out, put it on your cake plate, and spoon over the drizzle while it’s still warm. Let it cool all the way, and serve with a little bit of ice cream and a little bit of extra ‘shine.
